U12s with the perfect start to their league campaign against Lucan Sarsfields
It was a beautiful morning to start any campaign, and the boys did very well. Playing with the wind in the first half, the danger always was that we would not get up enough scores to count against wind and hill in the second half. But we need not have worried, with goals galore! Unfortunately Lucan only had 11 players today, which meant we also had to play 11, rather than 13, meaning we had 5 strong subs on the bench for most of the match. But that can’t be helped, and with various injuries etc, it was great to have the depth of talent available. We told the boys this was the hardest team we’ve had to pick yet, which is a credit to them.
Great praise due to Mathew B coming out after his U11 match, and a special word of praise to Byron, who although he was sick and could not play, he still travelled out to support his team mates – now that’s a winning formula! I would also mention Brian H, who came straight from his “all night” Confirmation party to be there, and even played well!
Some fantastic skill on display today (as you would now expect from this team), but even better was the movement and passing – the training twice a week now is paying off – we were very impressed with some of the passes and many of the scores were the result of strong running and multiple hands.
Given our last performance against Lucan where they were deadly in front of goals and scored 6 against us, we asked Seamus to be in goals for the full match today – although he had a quiet first half, the second half was much busier – and he showed great strength in the goals ensuring Lucan knew there was going to be no soft ones. Thanks for that Seamus. Cian C was his usual self in the full back line – very impressive in the first half in particular, coming out time and time again in front of his man to win the ball and clear up the field. Brian H got stuck in at wing back very early on and showed no ill effects from the late night partying with his father! Mathew F, having started wing forward, and bagging a nice goal, played the second half in the full back line and was a revelation – mopping up Lucan attacks time and time again with excellent reading of the game and sure-footed skills under the ball. Conor K started corner back as he is just coming back from a bad chest infection – he had a great game all round, finishing in the middle of the field. Conor R started mid field where he did very well, and shifted to full back for a period of time – making some fine catches, before taking a heavy knock and being substituted.
Paul started wing back and did well – linking up a few times with midfield – but a thumb injury meant he had to also be substituted. On again in the second half, he shipped a late and heavy tackle on the side line (which he was none too pleased about!), which the Lucan coach apologised for afterwards (having spoken to his own player). Daniel C started on the other wing, and also got injured having fallen heavily on his leg, and had to be substituted (put that on ice for the evening Daniel).
Mark O L was the engine room at midfield, with some excellent ball winning and tackling, as well as being the instigator of many of our attacks – a great performance Mark. Cian D finished the game at midfield with Paul, but started up front – and boy what a match Cian had, taking the first goal and 2 further points, but more importantly winning many hard balls under pressure. What a game! Well done Cian D. Hubie started wing forward outside Cian D – and once again showed his raw speed and talent – causing Lucan Sarsfields no end of problems throughout the match – we eventually had to take him off once he scored a 3 goal hat-trick in the space of 5 minutes, with super running and fantastic passing from his team-mates. Adam was our final starting full forward – improving with every game Adam! He won plenty of ball today, making some lovely runs and taking a couple of fine scores – always a threat to the opposition due to his strength.
Eoin H slotted in wing back for some of the first second half as well as up front – and got up to the speed of the game very quickly – there was no easy ball out there and Eoin battled very well. Cian M once again showed his versatility with a spell in the back line towards the end of the first half as well as up front for the second half, where he scored a long range goal and 2 fine points – well done Cian. Max also slotted in well up front, working hard in there to get on the ball and well as ensuring the backs were under pressure coming out. Unlucky not to get on the end of more kick passes from midfield – he nonetheless kept working hard for the team.
Luke L made the ultimate sacrifice lining out with Lucan for the first 10 minutes so that we could get the game started, but then got his chance up front for the Gers – where he was unlucky not to convert a couple of moves to scores with his left foot. Finally, Mathew B, having made the long trip out from Cornelscourt after his U11s game also get into the mix with 15 minutes up front at the end of the match – thanks for coming our Mathew.
A ‘run by’ by Mr Conefrey during the second half caused a bit of commotion, and he was delighted with how well the boys were doing.
A big thanks to Dave, who had to ref the match… a thankless job!
Well done to all the boys on their first league win, in such a comprehensive fashion, Gers won 8 11 to Lucan Sarsfields 2 5 in the end.
Looking forward to the next one – now that the evenings are hopefully getting warmer we will get everyone back at training twice a week.
Thanks to all the super supporters out there in Lucan today – it means alot to the boys and the coaches!
