Under 10s Hurling vrs Shankill

A light drizzle meet us in Shanganagh Castle for this 1 team game Vrs shankill. For the first half Johnnie o’ Donoghue was our goalie, our back line was Kevin Kavanagh, Conor Foley and John o Callaghan. Morris ter Horst and Owen Twomey manned the middle of the park, up front we had Adam Lyons, David Mannix and Shane coyne, Aodhán Kennedy played with Shankill. Right from the start we were switched on and the benefit of this soon came as Adam scored a good goal to open the scoring. A period of constant pressure followed as we camped in their half because Morris and Owen were sending the sliotar back into the forwards anytime it came to them. Shane was enjoying himself working hard and getting into great positions and his teammates feed the ball to him scoring 3 goals and 2 points in the half, Shankill broke away during the half but struggled to get past our defensive line with the 3 lads determined to give them no good opportunity to score. The couple of times that they did break through they found Johnnie in top form denying them with some great saves. A super point by Owen from close to the halfway line capped a fine first half from the Gers.
Halftime team talk was easy and they just needed to be told to continue what they were doing. We asked them all to try and lift the ball at every opportunity, A reshuffle with Kevin playing for Shankill in the second half and Aodhán rejoining us. Morris went into goals Johnnie, Shane and Conor were in defence, Adam , David and Aodhán were up front with John in the middle with Owen. Shankill started the 2nd half on the offence and if it wasn’t for a quality save from morris they would have got the opening score of the half. David really hit his stride in the 2nd half and was lifting the ball anytime he got a little bit of space scoring 3 goals in the half the last one a looping long range shot that crept under the crossbar right in the corner from distance.Shane had a spell in goals before Conor took over both making great saves to keep shankill scoreless along with the ferocious defending from Aodhán who had swapped position with Johnnie. Adam got our final score getting his 2nd goal after a sweet pass from Johnnie left him 1 on 1 vrs their keeper. A good final 5 minute spell from Shankill netted them two goals which was a great reward for them as they kept going right till the end.
The lads mentors and parents were all delighted with the performance seen today and it was encouraging to see the work that they are putting in at training paying off in a match situation. Special thanks to Darren for helping at training the last couple of weeks and he will be there with us on the next two thursdays too. Hope to see you there.
