Gers Girls Magnificent in Marlay Park.

Gers U9 Girls made it two wins and a draw from three matches in a competitive blitz against strong opposition in Naomh Eoin Ballinteer GAA club on Sunday.

In the first game, Gemma was on fire taking her scores brilliantly. We raced into a 5-0 lead by the break. The high quality football continued in the second half with additional scores from Lorna before Gers completed the match with a 7-1 win. All girls contributed to the fine display; Anna K pulled off some lovely passes as did Grace G who almost got a cracking score in the first half, Anna C defended brilliantly and our new recruit Megan Breslin showed strength and skill coming from midfield and defence. As always Willow was a rock in defence.

The second game was entirely different. Ballinteer played their best girls team for the this game and in truth they were the better team in the first half and led 2-0 by half time. What struck us coaches was the sheer determination of our girls to stay competitive and get a result.

And so they dug deep and really fought hard for each other. Two scores in the second half from Gemma and Lorna got the team back on level terms for a well deserved draw.

In the third game (against Ballinteer’s third girls team!) we were able to switch things around. Jessica came out of goals after a fine display for the first two games. And she was replaced by Luisa, for the first half, and Grace K for the second half who were both fantastic. No surprises that Gemma and Lorna were again to the fore with the scores, but all of our girls got in on the act. Anna K narrowly missed with a fine effort, Megan scored her first goal, on her debut, and Anna C got two brilliant late scores.

The final score of 7-1 was a fair reflection on the girls’ dominance.

The girls were a credit to their Mums and Dads, coaches and to everyone involved in the club. Thanks also for everyone who turned out to support the team. It makes a real difference.

From a small base we’re now able to field two teams at U8 and U9 girls’ levels and we have new members joining all the time.

If you know of any girls who would be interested in joining the team, we’re always happy to take on new members. Please contact Darren Holton or Patricia Kelly or any other member of the pink stripe brigade.
