U12s loose to Parnell’s

The U12s travelled to Parnell’s GAA on a perfect morning for round six of the league. Having only had one session together since the summer break, we expected a bit of rustiness and a lack of fitness and unfortunately that was the story of the day.  We have to thanks eligible U13s (Shane and Mark) for their help.

With no lack of effort or spirit, the boys played well in the first half, at times showing the same clever flowing football that had served them so well in the first half of the season. Those around the middle (Omar, Zenon, Ben, Matthew and Mark) worked hard both going forward and when covering back, and they fed the forwards (Padraig, Sam, Eoin H, Liam, Hugo) with some decent ball.  We continue to aim for goal a little too often – instead of taking the easier points – but were ahead by a little at half time.  Our backs (Dylan, Robbie, Jack P, Ned and Eoin B) and our goalie (Shane) were kept reasonably busy, but nothing they couldn’t deal with.  It seemed that the same again in the second half – particularly with the wind – would be enough.

Very quickly in the second half, our lads started to struggle. The red faces and hands-on-knees showed that the tank was empty and no matter how much they tried, they didn’t have the legs.  Parnell’s started to grow into the game more and more, and successive advances down the centre produced a number of goals.  In possession, we continued to try to run through the opposition – instead of using the wind – and eventually we ground to a halt.

The game ended 5-8 to 3-10, and it also ended our unbeaten run (which we should be very proud of). We remain in second with our next game against the table-toppers.  We have two weeks to get back to our best, and we hope to see everyone at the training sessions between now and then.
