Ballyboden Halloween Tournament Report.

Our U13s had a very successful Halloween tournament on bank holiday Monday last. It was 13 a side with one sub. Our Captain for the day was Zach. The tournament was set up in Feile format of 4 groups of 4 teams. We were in group 3 along with St Annes A from Bohernabreena, St Marys B from Leixlip & Ballyboden C. All games were two 12mins halfs with a 2 min break in between.

Our line up on the day was in goals Paul H. Full back line was Shane P, Zach, & Jack Porter from our U12s. Half backs were Morgan & Mark. In mid we had Jamie & Peter, half forwards were Charlie & Hugo from our U12s along with Cormac. Upfront we had Cian & Robert with Thomas who subbed on & off in the forward line.

First up was St Marys with a 10.30am throw in. Jamie had our opening score when his shot from distance went all the ways to the net in the first minute. Hugo added a nice point from play on 3 minutes. We missed a lot of goal chances after this when we should have taken our points H.T Score; Gers 1:01 St Marys 0:01.

Hugo got our 1st score of the 2nd half a nice point from play on 15mins. Marys added points on 15 & 17mins soon after Jamie burst through the Marys defence to kick a powerful shot to the net. We got hit for goals on 20 & 22mins to go behind by a point going into the final minute. Our U12s rescued this one for us though when with the last play Charlie kicked a great foot pass to Hugo in front of goal on his own where he calmly finished to the net. F.T Score Gers 3:02 St Marys 2:03.

Our 2nd game was against St Annes with a 11.30am throw in. This was a challenging game with no quarters asked for or given. Hugo kicked our only score of the half a point from play on 3mins. H.T.Score; Gers 0:01 St Annes 1:04. For the 2nd half Zach moved to midfield where he had an outstanding game with Peter moving to full back where he took the kickouts. Morgan kicked our only score this half a great point from play. F.T Score Gers 0:02 St Annes 1:07.

Our 3rd game was against Boden with a 12.00pm throw in. This was a must win game for us to finish runners up in our group. Jamie opened the scoring with a nice point on 3mins. Charlie & Jamie again added points on 7mins. The home side got in for their 1st score a point from play on 10mins. Peter kicked our next point soon after but Boden had the last score of the half a goal to leave the H.T Score: Gers 0:04 Boden 1:01 a draw.

We had a great start to the 2nd half with points from Jamie & Morgan. Boden threw everything at us at this point but our defence was on top conceding only a point on 22mins to leave just one between the sides. However we finished the stronger with 2 late points from Jamie & Robert for a famous win. F.T Score Gers 0:08 Boden 1:02.

We would now play Johnstownbridge from Kildare in the runners up final for groups 3&4 with a 2.00pm throw in. The final did not start good for us conceding 2 goals in the first three minutes. However from their to half time we played our best football of the day. Seven great points from play & frees Jamie four & one each from Peter, Hugo & Charlie. It could have been better but Hugos goal bound shot went wide off the post just before half time. H.T Score; Gers 0:07 Johnstown 2:01 a draw.

Johnstown opened the 2nd half scoring with points on 13 & 14mins. Charlie had our first score a point on 16mins soon after Hugo had the ball in the net after a quick passing movement. Jamie pushed us 3 points in front on 18mins when he split the posts from distance with a free. It did look good for us at this point however Johnstown did finish the stronger as we tired they got in for scores. Our keeper Paul made a few brave point blank saves at this point to keep his team in the game! F.T Score; Gers 1:09 Johnstown 4:06.

Marc, James & I are proud of all our 14  players who left eveything on the pitch coming up just short in the end playing a fast, attacking & attractive style of Gaelic Football. Well done to Jamie our top scorer on the day with 2:10. To our three U12s Hugo, Charlie & Jack who I am sure will have learned a lot from the day. To Des, Ronan & Ciaran who helped with the team & to all the Mums & Dads who shouted on The Gers!!!

With Feile 2018 just 5 months away now I feel that this tournament will stand to our boys U13 & U12s  who will make up our U14 Feile Panel as they more than held their own against teams from higher leagues. Marc will let you know if we are going to train on Thursday evening venue & time. Our last League 7 game will be at home in Cornelscourt this Saturday 4th Nov at 3pm against Scoil Ui Chonaill. We will look again for a big squad of U12s & U13s for this important game.
