U12 boys vs Erin Go Bragh
16 boys made the journey out to Clonee on a sunny afternoon for our 2nd league game. James K started in goals, Aodhán and Owen G were the full backs, in the half back line were James D, Owen T and Oisin. Max and John formed the midfield partnership with Johnnie, Frankie and Mark the half forwards, Luka and Eoin D completed the starting lineup in the full forwards. Morris, Kevin and Sean were the subs.
We started fast with good play leading to both our full forwards scoring a point each in the opening 4 minutes and then we switched off, our passing wasn’t crisp or to the man and every time we were getting forward we gave the possession away way too cheaply. EGB grew in confidence and should have punished us but a mix of good defending and bad shooting kept them at bay. It is worth mentioning that we were playing up a slight hill and against a deceptively strong wind but this only added to our struggles and was no means the cause of it. Time after time we gave the ball away and when they broke they seemed to have 1 or 2 men free, last gasp tackling and strong pressure from our defenders meant that EGB had to wait until the 14th minute before they got their first score a goal from the penalty spot. We respond immediately with Mark scoring a good point to level it back up. Any thoughts of us pushing on were quickly dispelled when EGB got their 2nd goal on the 16th minute. We did improve for the final 10 or so minutes of the half with our passing improving and we played much more of the game up their half. Johnnie was winning possession with some good high fielding , John and Max upped their work rate to ensure EGB couldn’t trouble our defence much. We get the last 2 scores of the half with a point from a free by Frankie and a point from Luka to finish the half 1 point down HT Gers 0.05 – EGB 2.00
Half time was all about getting the lads switched on, improve our passing, support each other more and to go for goals when we get the chance. Their workrate had improved near the end of the half but we knew it was still below what they can do. We had outscored them 5 – 2 but were a point down. On the balance of play we should have been further behind and if it wasn’t for the 5 backs we would have been much further adrift. They don’t give up easy and even when they are beaten they keep going making it as hard as possible for the other teams forwards to score. They don’t get the mentions in the reports as often as the forwards but collectively and individually they are a credit to the team and the backbone on which we thrive. Our 3 subs come on with Morris on for Johnnie, Sean for Mark and Kevin for Aodhán.
With the wind and hill now in our favour we fancied our chances of getting a positive result and we score a point straight away with Owen D slotting over the equallings point. EGB hadn’t read the script and scored their 3rd goal straight after. This was the final straw as far as our lads were concerned, they started to play like they can and produced wave after wave of swift attacking football mixing up short hand passes with long kicks backed up with tireless running both with and without the ball. Over the next 5 minutes we battered them, they had no answers but when we play like this not many do. It started with Frankie blasting in a goal on 3 minutes, followed quickly by Oisin scoring a great point for us to go ahead again. They started fouling us and when that happens teams usually get punished, Frankie was in top form from dead balls and he slots over 3 from frees and 1 from play in the next 4 minutes, John then gets on the scoring charts with a smartly taken point and suddenly we are 6 points up after 8 minutes. we make some more substitutions and Johnnie goes into goal for James K. Jame’s kickouts have been brilliant he alway had a good strike with the boot but his accuracy has improved immensely and is a great weapon to have to start off our attacks. The scoring took a little break as both teams kept on attacking and it wasn’t until the 13th minute that EGB score a point from a free. Again we respond when Frankie takes a sideline that drops under the crossbar into the onion bag. He follows it up quickly with yet another point from a free. Going into the last 5 minutes John goes into goal for Johnnie and James K gets the final 2 scores, firstly a goal straight out the the Luka book of goalscoring, sidestepping the keeper to tap into an empty net and then with the final kick of the game a monster point from a 45 that would have sailed over if he had hit it from the halfway line.
Final Score Gers 3.15 EGB 3.01
