2007 Boys vs Fingallians

Our final league game before the summer break sees us travel to Swords as we look to build on our good win last week. Thank you to all who traveled out to support the team.

18 players travelled out to play but unfortunately Fingallians only had 11 players so it was a very busy day on the Subs front. James K was our starting keeper, Tadhg (capt) and Eoin G were the full backs, Oisin and James D half backs, Max and Hugo our midfield partnership, In the half forwards were Frankie and John with Colin and Luka completing the starting lineup in the full forward line. Our subs were Aodhán, Sean, Owen T, Alex, Christian, Mark and Morris. With the vast numbers of changes involved in the game I won’t be reporting on them but well done to Tom for making sure everyone got a decent amount of game time.

Pregame we told them of the importance of working hard and keeping their concentration especially considering the amount of changes that would be happening. We start off strong and win possession from the throw in but unfortunately John narrowly puts the chance wide. We didn’t have to wait long for the first score though as Max scores a goal in the 3rd minute. Frankie tags on 2 points 1 each from play and a free. Fingallians come down our end of the pitch and score a nice point. We were playing with a slight wind in the first half so keeping the scoreboard ticking over for ourselves was important and we answered back with a goal for Luka. Being only an 11 aside game there was plenty of space on the pitch and Fingallians worked their next score well putting in their nippy half forward who finished it for a goal, he was easily their best player and was a handful for Oisin all game as every chance that they got they looked to play the ball to him, but fair play to Oisin who won more than his fair share in this battle. After the Fingallians goal we took over the game for 10 or so minutes using both the wind and space to our advantage playing some neat attacking ball. First to trouble them was Frankie but very unlike him he put a rare one wide, this was only a momentary respite for them as John wins the kickout breaks through a few tackles and puts over a sweet point. Frankie quickly adds another before our defence is called into action and good pressure and tackling from Eoin G and Tadhg forced them to shoot from out wide which never troubled the target. With the first quarter over we are up by 6 which was a fair reflection of the possession and attacking opportunities we had. We kick on and start to turn the screw with Colin scoring a goal, Max slotting over a good point, John scores a goal before Luka gets a point from a free. Fingallians again find their danger man in space and he again gets a goal to finish off the scoring in the half. HT : Gers 4.06 – Fins 2.01

Half time we commend them on their workrate and intensity of the tackle, Fingallians were finding it very difficult to string many passes together with out one or two of our lads tackling or tracking them and this was definitely something that we want to see every game. After all the substitutions in the first half we reset to the starting team apart from Owen T for Hugo but made a couple of switches Max went into goal with James K going into the half forwards with John dropping to midfield. Playing against the wind for the 2nd half we wanted to stay tight to their players and link up our play with shorter passes.

Owen T wins the throw in and bursts by their tackles bringing the ball into the danger area before the ref blows for over carrying, we win back the ball from their free and Owen scores the point that his earlier play deserved. In the 3rd minute they get a goal to give them slight hope before James K dashes it with a tally of 2.01 in a 4 minute spell, one of the goals was after good work by Aodhán on the wing who put a ball into James (playing now in the FF as luka had swapped to defence) who controlled it one handed and found himself one on one with their keeper before calmly finishing. In the 13th minute Frankie gets another point from a free before James resumes his scoring spree getting another 2.01 this time in a 3 minute spell. He was clearly enjoying his time out of the goals and showing us what he can do at the other end of the pitch. On the 18th minute Aodhán scores a cracking goal for himself with a powerful shot after finding himself in behind their defence. He usually plays in the fullback line and was also enjoying his chance in the full forward line with this score and a couple of assists for James K. With time running out they were struggling to trouble us and it was hard for them with no subs and the intensity that we brought to the game meaning they were very tired but they still got down our end a few times and were rewarded with a good goal for their perseverance. Frankie gets the final score of the game with another beautiful point from play. Full time : Gers 9.11 – Fins 4.01

It was a really good team performance considering the amount of changes going on throughout the game, everyone played their part, from front to back our tackling was top notch and the workrate to track runners and close down space for them was the best that they have done this season. It was great to see James K on the rampage and for there to be 8 different scorers, sometimes we are over reliant on the same few players getting our scores so the more belief each player has that they can score the easier games will become for the team. We have the small matter of a game down in Kildare next week with a trip to Redhills afterwards. A well deserved break for the players coaches and parents follows. Our first game in September is against the top of the table team Ballyboden so will be a good test for us to restart the campaign.
