Having trained really well since the previous match, the mentors for the U9’s couldn’t wait to see how the team got on against St Mark’s of Tallaght last Saturday morning. The pitch was in great condition after Friday’s rain and the sun was shining as the team did their warm ups.
Right from the first minute we knew we were in for a tough match, as both teams battled hard for early possession and scores. Hugo and Omar in the middle set the scene for Geraldine’s performance, not giving an inch as they scrapped for the first few high balls, and continually spread the possession up to Tom, Sam and Eoin, who were excellent in the forward line. Geraldine’s played with the wind in the first half, but points were hard to come by, and only the watertight defending, dogged determination and sheer class of J.D., Alex and Padraig at the back kept the scores close.
Some solid tackling and clever passing from Mark, together with a gritty and energetic performance from Robbie (who was just back from long term injury) helped to swing the tide back in Geraldine’s favour early in the second half. More tactical substitutions brought Dylan, Liam and Jack into proceedings, and their relentless tackling and renewed energy brought the scores level with a quarter of the game remaining. Ben returned to his favoured goal keeping position and his pin-point kick-outs and continued master class by the Omar and Hugo kept all the supporters gripped to the game.
In the end, St Mark’s pulled away and won by a couple of points, but, it was without a doubt Geraldine’s best performance yet, and a day the boys can look back on with a lot of pride. Really well done to the boys, and we just look forward to the reverse fixture to get the win we no doubt deserved. And finally, a big thanks to the ref for doing a great job.
