The U10’s travelled to Ballinteer on a freezing morning to play the first match of the year. Having only trained once since early December, the mentors expected a bit of rustiness, but got the opposite.
From the start, the team showed great team-work and lots of grit and determination to make it very difficult for a very good opposition team. Alex’s strength in goal and great kick-outs gave great confidence to the back line, allowing them to focus on man-marking the versatile St John’s forwards. JD (who controlled proceedings from the middle of defence), Jack (whose marking continues to be second to none), Robbie (who ended up getting man-of-the-match) and Liam (who was always in the right place at the right time) together succeeded in breaking down every Ballinteer attack while providing quality ball to our mid-fielders. As always, Omar and Hugo gave their all in the centre; interchanging with speed and precision; and switching from attach to defence in a flash. Both scored some terrific points breaking quickly from the middle of the pitch.
Up front, Eoin (Lightening-quick) Byrne, Sam (who had his best ever game) and Dylan (a constant threat, as always) were busy throughout the game, while Mark, Eoin and Padraig strengthened the team while they were on the pitch.
Overall, while there is still lots of work to do, this was a great start to the season and bodes well for the tough games the team will have in the next few weeks. Well done to the boys,… and to the parents (and siblings) who braved freezing conditions to cheer on the team.
