The Gers adult team returned to winning ways in our first competitive match of the 2013 season when beating Ballinteer St. John’s in Loreto park, Rathfarnham, on Sunday.
The Ó Broin cup fixture was played in February sunshine with a strong breeze favouring the home side to start with. The breeze was being blamed for some wayward shooting by the Gers forwards but once they steadied themselves the scores started to come. Some good link play by Gary Bridges helped set up scores for Donal McEnery and Lochlann McCabe. The fitter Geraldines were not allowing the physically stronger Ballinteer side settle into any pattern of play, getting a hand in to dispossess or blocking down opponents along with harrying at every opportunity.
The move of the match started from a Ballinteer attack when Neil Carlin blocked down a shot for a score, he worked the ball out quickly and within no time Aaron McDonnell was putting the finishing touches to his goal after the ball being worked up the length of the pitch in a series of passes. By the time Ballinteer had their first score the Gers had 2-5 clocked up, both goals courtesy of McDonnell. Ballinteer had their possession but were finding it difficult to get past the defending of our backs, Cillian McCabe and Karol Guerin being particularly prominent in this feature. With the solid platform being provided by our defense and midfield, the forwards punished St. John’s.
With a 2-6 to 0-3 lead at half-time and the breeze in our favour for the second period we expected to score more than the 5 points that resulted. Another smart point from Lochlann McCabe, a McEnery free, good scores by Dick Young and Micheál Curtin from distance, and a well deserved point for Padraig Flynn were the second half scoregetters. Neil Costello came on in goal for the second half making his adult debut for the Geraldines, great to see more lads coming through from the underage ranks. Gary Bridges also made his first competitive start for the Gers after joining us this year, his energy and passing ability were very evident in Loreto park on Sunday and he will surely have a big part to play with us this year. Sunday also was notable for another first, John “Doyler” Hynes’ first game as team captain for 2013. Let’s hope it will be a year to remember !!
