Geraldines 4-12 – 2-4 Ballyboden
What a display tonight! With a score line that highlights the dominance we had on the field – 4-12 to 2-4, the Gers boys really showed their style and speed of play tonight, coming up against a big Ballyboden side, who were playing on their home pitch. Watched by a vocal crowd (including Darren Magee), the Gers started off at a tremendous pace, with ferocious tackling to gain possession of the ball, and everyone on their toes, anticipating the next ball or the next move. Tonight we saw some of the best moves and best scores of the season thus far.
Again, our panel system played dividends with a number of strong players missing tonight, including Hubie, Brian, Ruari, Cian and Conor B… just shows you the talent we have in the squad!
Max started off in goals for us tonight, and things were quiet, but he was confident under the ball and got his kicks out on target. He then swapped with Luke, and moved up to the forward line. Unlucky not to get on the end of a few scores, Max finally showed great reaction times with a lovely punch into the net. Luke continued the strong goal keeping as well as playing target man up front, showing his usual comfort on the ball and strong distribution skills.
Our backline was rock solid all night. Seamus and Naoise anchored the defense, and ‘Boden just could not get past them. Their reading of the game was excellent and they both showed great composure under pressure. Conor K started at the centre of defence playing his usual huge game of winning ball under pressure, tackling with purpose and invariably winning the ball, and super block-downs – the opposition just do not want to see him coming at them! Daniel C had another fine game at right half back, some great catches and bursts up the field stand out in this reporter’s memory. Paul was on his left – and what a lightening start – up and down the wing getting on the end of 5 or 6 great moves early on the set the pace, scoring some fine points from play.
Conor R and Byron made up the midfield partnership again this evening – Conor covering huge ground and showing real strength on some of ‘Boden’s biggest. Some excellent anticipation and fine distribution up to the forwards was on display. Byron covered every blade of grass, and again was a key link man in many of the moves. Eoin H, Mathew F and Mark interplayed very well in the half forward line. Eoin also had a stint as a half back (when Paul took a hard (and late claimed Dave Ring!) to the chest that slowed him down for awhile) – again displaying sure footwork and a very good head going forward. Mathew F again showed how talented a footballer he is – with great composure on the ball, and an uncanny way of keeping the ball in play – getting his pass through. Mark had another fine game, bagging some lovely points and a powerful goal… but more importantly being one of the boys who got the team sprinting forward and passing.
Up front, Adam was the target man, working hard to get out in front and competing very well. Cian M was on his left for much of the game (as well as a turn in the back line), and had a fine game once he settled – he got on the end of many moves up the field and got a couple of lovely scores including a fine goal… it could have easily been more! Well done Cian.. you stepped up well tonight! Mathew B played a lot of the game on the right… again showing well on occasion, getting out in front of his man and competing for the ball, as well as some strong defensive work as ‘Boden built their attack from the back. James also featured well up front tonight, and was very unlucky to be blocked down on a couple of occasions when this man thought he had a point… very unlucky James!
All in all a great night, with fantastic support on the side lines. Thanks to Darren for turning up to watch the boys progress – Darren with help shape our training sessions to address some of the issues there tonight.
The boys are really beginning to move the ball well – but we’re still doing some weak passing (including some short kick passes) and probably still struggling for real movement up front at times when midfield were on the attack… just needs more coaching and more time on the training field.
We’ve also got to keep working on the basics… strong catching and passing with both hands…
A great night out!! Sets up the weekend for the real clinch match on Sunday at 2pm… Kerry vs Dublin! Come on the Kingdom!!!
