Good conditions away in Marino on Saturday last for our penultimate League 7 match against St Vincents. It was 14 a side with no subs unfortunately for us for this one on the full pitch. Our captain Zach Kenny Ward on winning the toss elected to play with the wind.
Paul Homorodean played in goal for only his 2nd time. Paul made many outstanding saves during the game. Paul made one great high catch & knocked away many more goal bound shots. His kickouts were quick & accurate & he will be the solution to our goalkeeping problem going forward with more coaching which we are working on as we count down to Feile 2018.
Our full back line was Shane O Sullivan, Zach & Ronan Kennedy. All 3 put in a big shift & more than held their own against a big physical Vinnys full forward line. Tight marking was the order of the day staying goalside & blocking in that order. They gave very little away & were a credit to themselves their team.
Our half back line of Mark Maguire, Alex Hopkins & Alex Mason were outstanding on the day. They looked for qiuick kickouts, tackled, passed & ran the ball hard deep into enemy terrritory at every opportunity from where ever on the pitch causing Vinnys defence no end of trouble.
Peter Falvey playing at midfield with Jamie Maguire opened the scoring with a nice point from play on 7 minutes. Soon after Vinnys got in for a goal but this was quickly cancelled out when Shane Power burst through the home teams defence & kicked a powerfull shot to the net on 8 minutes. On 16min Jamie had our next score when he was quickest to react to a breaking ball in front of the goal kicking first time to the net. Vinnys got through for points on 17 & 18min but we finished the half the stronger with points from Robert Walsh & Jamie Maguire on 29min to leave us ahead by one point at the break. Vinnys 2:02 Gers 2:03
We started the 2nd half on top again playing into the strong wind & our half forward line of Shane Power, Robert Walsh & Cormac McGann took the game to the home team along with Thomas O Sullivan & Cian Lowry up front were unlucky with scoring chances. Alex Hopkins landed a great point from play on 45min. On 52 minutes with us behind on a score of 2:04 to 4:04 we lost our ” Braveheart ” defender wing back Alex Mason who reluctantly left the pitch with a shoulder injury & with Vincents bringing on their 6 subs they hit us for scores.
How ever the score of the game came on 55 minutes when Peter got on the ball in his own half near the far touch line where he set off on a zig zag run through the Vinnys defence ending up in front of goal where he kicked a powerfull shot to the roof of the home teams net. Alex Hopkins got our last score another nice point from play on 59 minutes.
This again was not a bad result for our team & the score line did flatter the home team as it was only in the last 9min they pulled away. Their is great credit to all our players in this one with everyone giving their all for the jersey, team & club. Unavailable for the game were Morgan Tyrrell & Donal Harcourt who we look forward to have back soon from injuries.
We have been invited to play in the Ballyboden Halloween Bank holiday Monday Football blitz again. We will look to bring a strong squad made up of U12/U13 to this event that we got to the final of last year. Marc will have details next week for this event.
Our last League 7 game will be on Saturday 4th Nov at home to Scoil Ui Chonaill. Congrats to Jamie Maguire who has made it through to the next trial for the Dublin U14s Development Squad. We all wish Jamie the best of luck & hope he makes it all the way to the final squad. ” On The Gers “
