St. Pat’s Palmerstown 0-6 4-16 Gers
On a sunny early spring day away to St. Pat’s the Gers got their league campaign back on track with a comfortable win, this was an important win as our first game was decided by a last minute penalty conceded after being leading against Parnells most of the way through.
St. Pat’s started well with an early point scored by their centre back, this was followed up by Jim McGrath blocking a goal bound effort as the home team looked to be flying. Two excellent saves by the Pat’s keeper kept the game open and competitive but with Olof Gill and John Ahern getting control of midfield, chances continued to be made up front. Donal McEnery punished the home team’s indiscipline and was unerring from frees all day. A St. Pat’s defender booked early on was then sent off after 18mins. when he was black carded by the referee for abusive language, this made a difficult afternoon even more uncomortable when the lead was extended to 0-2 to 1-6 after 20mins. when Keith Stephens rounded the keeper and slotted home calmly despite the close attentions of the opposition no.1. At half-time the score was 0-3 to 1-9.
The second half started with both teams scoring points in the first few minutes, the freshly introduced Gary Bridges being found with long passes and him in turn setting up scores for McEnery and John Doyle. 2 quick goals from Stephens and Dick Young midway through the second half were added to by Bridges’ top corner finish from distance to allow us to run out with a big win that gives us our first league points of the year.
