After meeting up for squad photos at Clonkeen College we all headed off to Lucan Sarsfields GAA Club grounds at the 12th lock. We had our own dressing room for the day & were well looked after by our hosts. Ronan, Colm, Michael & others helped to put up the gazebo.
Our first game was a derby against our neighbours Kilmacud Crokes C on the big number one pitch with a 10.15am start. This was a must win game for us to get our day off to the best possible start. Crokes had Thomas Crotty & Michael Foley in their line up two former Gers 2004 players. We played with the wind first half & were unlucky not to have more scores on the board. Crokes on the other hand hit the ground running & were converting all their chances. Half Time Gers 0.05 Crokes 0.06.
Second half playing into the wind we struggled to get our fast moving, high press attacking game going. Crokes continued to have the upper hand taking all their scores to leave the Full Time Score; Gers 0:08 Crokes 1:12. Our scorers Jamie 0.02, Michael 0.02, Hugo 0.02, Mark 0.01 & Robert 0.01. A big thanks to Austie, Andy & Ted who along with the other mums & dads encouraged our team from the sideline.
Second game was against the home team Lucan Sarsfields B on the smaller number 2 pitch with a 12.45pm start. This was our best performance of the day, playing against the wind in the first half we defended well to leave the Half Time Score; Gers 0:02 Sars 0:02.
Second half we kicked some great points from play. Jamie after a give & go with Mark smashed a powerfull shot to the roof of the home team’s net on 47min to extend our lead. We had to hang on in the end though with Lucan getting a late goal & hitting a post with a penalty. Full Time; Gers 1:07 Sars 1:03. Scorers Jamie 1.02, Michael 0.03, Peter 0.01 & Cormac 0.01.
Third game was against Na Fianna C back on the big number 1 pitch.with a 2.45pm start. We played against the wind 1st half against a bigger more physical opposition. As in the 1st game we found it hard to move the ball, create & take scoring chances. Jamie got our only score of the half with a great point from play. Na Fianna got in for a goal in the 1st half stoppage time to leave the Half Time Score Gers 0.01 Na Fianna 1.04.
Second half playing with the wind we again struggled in attack. Peter kicked a point on 21min and Mark added another point soon after, that went off the post & over. Jamie kicked another great point on 32min to leave a goal between the sides. On 36min a high ball from one of our players went all the way to the Na Fianna net to level the scores. With another 7min of play we could not get what we thought would be the winning score. At the end we were informed that the full time score was Gers 1:03 Na Fianna 1:04. We had lost the game by a point. Even Na Fianna were surprised having not scored in the 2nd half. “It is better to be a lucky general than a good general”. They accepted the result and would not agree to try & have the score corrected!
Our 4th & last game against Ballyboden St Endas C was on the number 2 pitch with a 4pm start. As we could not top the group at this point we ran the bench & got all our U13s on. Playing against the wind 1st half Hugo was outstanding at mid. Jack at right corner made a couple of great blocks to deny certain goals & Sam got stuck in on the half back line. In goal Paul made 5 great point blank saves & had no chance with the goals. Half Time Score Gers 0:00 Boden 3:09.
Second half of what had been a very hot & long hard day where not much had gone right for us finished on a big high holding Boden the top team on the day to a draw 2.04 each with what was nearly our U13 team. In attack Charlie,Omar,Liam, Padraic & Eoin gave 100%. Full Time Gers 2:04 Boden 5:13. Our scorers Peter 2:02, Jamie 0.01 & Donal 0.01.
Unavailable today were Alex Hopkins & Mathew who were ruled out with injuries. It was great to see Mathew & Michael back training on Tuesday. We all wish Alex one of our best players who was a big loss to the team on the day a complete recovery. WE also wish a complete recovery to Jamie our top scorer on the day & Michael who played through the pain barrier with ankle & knee injuries.
We will continue to train as we have 3 very important League 8 games to play before the Summer break. The first is away to St Vincents B on Tuesday evening 22th May. We are also away to Scoil & Castleknock. We will try & bring these games forward. It is important we bring as strong a squad as we can to these games.
Finally a big thanks to all our players, to their Mums/ Dads and to everyone who helped in what ever way with our Feile squad. We hope the boys will have happy memories of the day when they look back in years to come. They have still a lot of football ahead & the experience will stand to them.” Up the Gers”,
