Gers 0-10 0-9 Crumlin

After a tight one point win against St Jude’s in the preliminary round the Gers ground out a similar margin of victory last Thursday evening against a game Crumlin side in the 1st round of the championship in Cornelscourt.

The sides were tied at 0-5 apiece at halftime with some sloppy passing and mistakes at the back resulting in scores to Crumlin. Keith Stephens, Gary Bridges, John Doyle and Aaron McDonnell all scored in that first half with Doyle getting his second and the equalising point just before the halftime whistle.

Crumlin tore into life at the start of the second half getting 2 quick points which the Gers clawed back temporarily before they re-established that lead by the 45th minute to leave the score at 0-7 to 0-9 entering the final quarter of the game. Evan O’Brien’s second pointed free was followed by his pass into Aido Green who turned to shoot an excellent towering shot that just cleared the crossbar to level matters up again at 0-9 each with 7 minutes remaining. The next score was always going to be vital in such a low scoring encounter and up stepped Doyle again to edge us into the next round of the championship with his fourth point of the evening.  The referee played 6 extra minutes of tension filled time that saw Daniel Hussey pull off a stunning one legged save and followed this up with a composed catch at the death just as time ran out for Crumlin.
