Gers 2-12 0-11 Erins Isle
After much heartache and questioning the Gers adult team got their season back on track with a 7 point win over Erins Isle on a wet cloudy Thursday evening in Cornelscourt. With losses knocking us out of the championship and cup along with a defeat away in Howth to Beann Eadair in the league it was important to stop the rot. That it was done with a string of absentees due to injuries and exams was all the sweeter.
Sometimes people say to give youth it’s chance and tonight the youths stood up and contributed handsomely with James Moffat scoring 2 good points and Paddy Slater linking well from the half forward line. Truth be told the Gers lead from pillar to post but there were plenty of bumps along the track, none moreso than when George Callery saw red after picking up his second yellow card not 5 minutes into the second period. Erins Isle scored 3 unanswered points subsequently that left only 2 points between the sides with the pressure back on. Gers best period came then with increased workrate all round and Olof Gill and John Ahern digging in to provide good ball into the forwards which resulted in frees and opportunities to run at the Finglas men in defence. Donal McEnery pointed from a free followed by further points from Karol Guerin, John Ahern and James Moffat to effectively close out the match.
First half goals from Aaron McDonnell and the elusive Aido Greene laid the platform for what looked like a return to form for the home side with a handy win but the Erins Isle resistance and the sending off ensured that the outcome was not decided until deep into the second period. Next up in the league is our visit to our Dalkey neighbours Cuala on the 10th of July in Hyde Park.
