Gers U9 Girls made it two from three in a competitive blitz against strong opposition in Naomh Olaf GAA club on Sunday.
In the first game, we took a three point lead into half time thanks to an excellent score by Lorna. Playing with a strong wind, Olaf’s came at us with determination and with Jessica in goal, and Willow’s and Louise’s excellent tackling, we kept them out until the last two minutes when two late scores allowed them a 6-3 win.
But we learned and made adjustments to improve for the next game. With the scores locked at 3-3, Anna K scored her first of the season by sending the ball skillfully into the far corner and out of their goalie’s reach. Shortly afterwards, Grace K almost added to the lead but for a fine save by their goalie. The teamwork for the whole game was terrific. Gemma and Grace G running onto the ball or making space to give options to their teammates in possession. Naomi and Anna C tackled ferociously at any sign of danger. The match was sealed when Lorna burst from midfield and scored a terrific point.
The third game was a tight affair and we took the lead thanks to a fine score by Luisa. But Olaf’s were back on level terms shortly afterwards. But our teamwork and skill levels allowed us to take control of the game. Willow was in fine form taking the ball out of the back line and always clearing danger. What was really great to see was the confidence of all girls in tackling the opposing team when they came at us. A score by Jessica put us back in front and we held on to take a second win.
From a small base we’re now able to field two teams at U8 and U9 girls’ levels and we have new members joining all the time.
If you know of any girls who would be interested in joining the team, we’re always happy to take on new members. Please contact Darren Holton, Patricia Kelly, Kathy Meehan, Ian Horan, Gareth Keane, Neil Guinan, Nicola Hogan, Dermot Connaughton or any of the other parents involved.
