Kilmacud Crokes (1) 2-8
Geraldines P. Moran 1-14
@ Silver Park
The short trip up to our neighbours was ultimately a fruitful visit which at one stage seemed like we were going to run out comfortable winners but to their credit Kilmacud battled back to make a tight game of it which went all the way to the final whistle.
Midfield domination and first to every ball saw the Gers into a 0-2 to 1-7 lead after 16 minutes – the goal an opportunistic finish from Jonathon Roche after the home ‘keeper fumbled. With Evan O’Brien running the show from midfield and ably assisted by Craig Scollard the supply to the forwards was providing opportunities with Keith Stephens and Martin Jennings most prominent, any indiscretions were punished expertly by the on form free-taking of Donal McEnery. A Gary Bridges run after picking up another O’Brien breaking ball ended with his sweetly struck left foot shot over the bar from 35 meters out. Following a McEnery run and point the locals had enough; a speculative shot from out on the right sideline dipped in under the bar to start their revival on 20 minutes. 2 minutes later Crokes had their second goal after some uncharacteristic sloppy defending in the visitors rearguard. The sides at halftime were separated by only a point 2-4 to 1-8.
An early Crokes tapped over point after good interplay brought the sides level. A free from distance by O’Brien soon pushed us on again and was all the sweeter taking the screaming coming from the home sideline attempting to put him off into account. A fisted point at the other end restored parity again but that was as good as it got for the Stillorgan men. Keith Stephens causing mayhem in the Crokes defence was being constantly fouled and McEnery duly obliged once more. A John Doyle point followed by a Crokes point after the ball had come off the crossbar left 2 in it on 48 minutes. The referee awarded us a penalty then but changed to a free in which left 3 in it with 10 to go. Some super defending and selfless workrate kept the locals at bay even after 5 extra minutes of the second half which were tension filled as chances went abegging at both ends but crucially no goal opportunities.
Overall a well deserved victory for the Gers but with another Kilmacud Crokes team in our division the job is only half done!
