Gers 9-9 Cuala 0-8
The Under 16 team made the short trip to Shankill to play Cuala in the League. We were missing a couple of players as William and Gavin( both of them keys parts of the defence) were unavailable so we had to make a few changes. There was snow falling in Cornelscourt but we were told the pitch in Shankill was fine. When we arrived the pitch was in good condition and the Gers players were really geared up for action Bryan O’Connor commented on the warm up as Brendan Whyte put the lads through the paces “ They Really Looks Sharp and Eager “ and boy was he right!
In the last two games we had lost an early goal and the lads were determined this would not happen this time. Eoin was back from injury which meant he paired up in the Midfield with Paddy and they were outstanding. Luke played as full back first time in years!!
The Gers started off well, Jonathan scored a great goal early on and was on fire for the whole first half and wait for it …… Jonathan scored 5 goals and 2 points in the first half! The Gers started to win the battles all over the pitch the defence of Kevin,Taylor,Mark,Daniel F,Daniel Mc and Jack never gave an inch and battled for every ball and that’s what restricted the opposition scoring chances. Paddy scored an impressive 1 – 3 from midfield, Eoin popped over one of the points of the game. Sam was great again and has been one of the players of the season so far really great, scored 1- 2, We welcomed back Joey from over seas one of our most consistent players over the years and a true “Ger” scored a Goal and a point, Leo and Ronan were a constant threat and never gave the opposition a chance to relax. James was as usual comfortable on the ball and setting up attack after attack and chipped in a great point. Conor was in at full forward for the second half and was a thorn in the side of the Cuala goalkeeper never making it easy for him, and then he popped up with a great goal through persistent playing!! Cian had a great game as usual, Oscar had another great game – his kick outs were excellent. We had the privilege of Andy Gibbon and Austie Hynes as spectators and the lads were really happy to hear encouragement from them. A special thanks to the parents and supporters, great to see.
Paul, Ger and Brendan
