Gers 3-11 3-8 Ballyboden Wanderers
The Gers got their league season back on track on Sunday with a good 3 point victory over the visiting Ballyboden Wanderers side. With our last league game away to Ballyboden St. Enda’s being our first defeat of the current campaign it was important to get back to winning ways to keep promotion ambitions to the fore.
The visitors threw a tactical twist into the fray when deciding to play 13-a-side and from the start it looked a good decision as a long ball into their tall no.14 resulted in a goal straight away, this was soon followed by a point and things looked ominous. But the Gers had been victorious in 2 recent tight championship matches and this experience stood to them as after 23 minutes were leading 0-6 to 1-2. Craig Scollard handled Wanderers dangerous no.14 for the remainder of the half and with more possession being won around the middle excellent running by the forwards resulted in a string of point scoring from John Doyle, Padraig Flynn and Evan O’Brien. A few minutes later Aaron McDonnell set up Evan for the first goal as he spun and finished a left footed shot to the net, better still was to come a minute later as John Doyle’s Garryowen was guided to the net by Dick Young leaving the halftime score at 2-6 to 1-2.
Halftime team talk revolved around the necessity not to rest on our lead but after 11 minutes of the second half both teams were tied at 2-6 apiece. 3 minutes in the Wanderers no.14 hit the crossbar with a shot and out it came, down the field went the ball and Lochlann McCabe did likewise. As Wanderers were now full of running an expertly finished goal by MOTM John Doyle was just the fillip required by the Gers . As the Gers added a few points on to their lead back came Wanderers with a well finished goal to reduce the lead to 2 points again. For the decisive closing period of the match Keith Stephens and co. carried the fight to the opposition, Keith being fouled as he carried the ball forward allowing Evan to knock over his frees and an earlier point scored by sub Cian Roche saw the match out.
Next up in the league for the Gers is an away fixture to St. Jude’s on the 14th of July, where they will be seeking revenge for our championship victory against them in mid June.
