Promotion for Senior A’s

Congratulations to all involved in the senior A teams great win today to clinch promotion to Division 7 next season. A Nail biting finish was served to the large partisan home crowd at Cornelscourt winning by the minimum to send them home happy.
The Gers got off to the perfect start taking the lead on 5minutes with a free from Donal McEnery. St Sylvesters hit back with a free of their own on 9 minutes. Playing with the wind and into the Cornelscourt end in the first half it was important to build a lead and they players duly obliged with 6 unanswered points up to the 23rd minute Craig Scollard (1p) Donal Mc (3p)(1f) Eoghan MacSweeney (1p) Gary Bridges (1p). Sylvesters upped their game for the last 5 minutes and tagged on 2 more frees before Craig slotted over his 2nd point of the game to end the half with the score Gers 0.08 Sylvesters 0.03.
The first score in the second half was always going to be crucial and fortunately we were given an early free on 3 minutes which Donal slotted over to increase the lead. Almost immediately Sylvesters played their best football of the game putting the Gers defence under some serious constant pressure but the defence were up to the task tackling like demons, hunting in packs and not giving up on any ball, their determination denied Sylvesters any score from play but they had closed the gap to just 1 point by the 22 minutes with 3 frees, a 45 and a super point from a sideline ball. The game looked like it could be slipping away from the Gers but James Moffett hooked over a point on the 25th minute to extend the lead to 2 and ease the pressure a little. Sylvester’s scored another free before Donal answered with a free of his own to keep the gap at 2 going into injury time. Sylvesters threw every at us in injury time looking for the goal that could snatch victory from us but true to form the defence held strong denying them. With the last kick of the game Sylvesters scored their first point from play to leave the final score Gers 0.11 Sylvesters 0.10
