St. Oliver Plunketts/Eoghan Ruadh          1-5

@ Cornelscourt

A comprehensive victory for an injury ravaged Gers side saw the regular league fixtures out in a sunny but windy Cornelscourt yesterday. With the home team having promotion play-offs in mind and the away team fulfilling a fixture that had little to no importance for them the game worked towards it’s inevitable conclusion over the course of the hour.

Plunketts started brightly but found themselves a goal behind when a Dan Hussey shot back off the woodwork (metal actually) was finished to the net by the ever alert Donal McEnery. The Navan road boys were getting plenty of early ball and working frees in scorable positions but were guilty of some very bad shooting. A McEnery pointed free followed by a David Lavelle special when set up smartly by Ceiteach MacStiofán was followed by the start of the Aido show. His first on 12 minutes, again set up by the Galway galloper, was soon added to a minute later by another fruityAido point. Some dodgy Plunketts free taking punctuated another Greene score that was blasted over from a tight angle…some say he may have been going for twines!

Lavelle then broke through the middle running a full 60 metres before smashing his shot over the bar. This was timed at 4.3 seconds by the Garda speed van on the dual-carraigeway and was thus given 3 penalty points. Hussey concluded the Gers 1st half scoring before Plunketts scored from a free to leave it at 1-7 to 0-2 at the turnover.

The canter continued in the second half as an early McEnery point from play and a free from the same player was followed by another Lavelle sprint. After dinking his way through the Plunketts defence he hammered a shot away that the ‘keeper saved well for what should have been a 45. The ref thought better of the situation as he knew Lavelle’s mammy as they are both from Kilcar and awarded the point. Seems fair enough really. All was bright and wonderful with the world.

Then with everyone smiling at each other the Navan road boys had enough. Some incisive running through the Gers rearguard resulted in a very good finish to the net which left the score at 1-9 to 1-3 after 43 minutes. It was wake up time – McEnery set Killian McCabe through to rifle over a point, a minute later Olof Gill’s seemingly goal bound shot went off the crossbar and over. Aido then went on another scoring spree, scoring 2 points in 30 seconds and another minutes later. MacStiofán and Aido combined well for for 2 late points for Ceiteach which sandwiched Craig Scollard’s point that concluded the afternoon’s scoring.

Stat of the day: Plunketts only score from play was their well worked goal, all 5 points coming from frees. Either the defensive side of our game was sound or we conceded too many frees!
