Storm Doris couldn’t stop this game from going ahead and it was well worth playing it. Conditions were far from ideal for hurling but it was dry and those who were there were treated to a fair and even game. Mid term again effected our numbers so 3 players from the u9s were drafted in to make it a 12 aside game. In the first half we lined up with Shane Coyne in goals, Kevin Kavanagh, Aodhan Kennedy, JP McCambridge u9 and Marc Gil defending the cornelscourt end with the wind and hill against them. David Hopkins, Frankie Rowley and Johnnie Donohoe providing the midfield steel. Up front were Daniel Browne and Cillian Gaughran both u9s, Harry Weir and John O’Callaghan. Playing against the strong breeze St Kevins put our defence under a lot of pressure but good defending and closing them down quickly made them rush most of their shots. Shanes long puck outs gave us a couple of opportunities to score but St Kevins held us at bay and they scored a nice goal to put them in front at the break.
A few changes at half time David in goals for Shane to move to midfield with John and Frankie, Aodhan and Marc moved up front with Johnnie and Harry going into defence. With the wind behind us now the game was played in St Kevins half more this time but they scored a goal and a point before Frankie got a goal from a free. Both teams created more chances but with the defences on top it was proving difficult to add to the scores. With this being the first time that we played where air hurling was allowed from the start it was good to see the boys trying to get the sliothar into their hands when they had the opportunity. Great determination and Bravery from Kevin and Harry in the 2nd half while defending along with accurate passing turned defence into attack repeatedly. Overall it was a promising display from the Gers considering they were up against a hurling only club. Thanks to the u9 lads who played with us we hope you enjoyed it.
