A great turnout for the Gers with 24 boys ready for action against Ballinteer St Johns, 3 games of 8 aside were played. Team 1 had Harry,David H,David M,Luka,Oisin,Frankie,James D and Owen T. Team 2 was Max,Shane,Eoin D,Colin,James K,Eoin G,John and Tadhg. Team 3 was Johnnie,Christian,Tom,Aodhán,Adam,Charlie,Kevin and Adam.
Team 1 played a great game full of skill and commitment, in the 1st half it was a close affair with BSJ trading scores with us we opened up with a goal and point before they answered back with 3 points from one of their forwards. David H was instructed to stick closer to this player and not to give any easy scores (he had got in behind our defence for 2 of them) and he did a super job in stopping him from getting further scores. Our midfield of Frankie and Luka combined with our forwards well and helped out the defence when needed. David M started in goals and when switched to defence we looked a lot more solid with him sweeping up plenty of loose ball, constantly battling for possession, his reading of the game was very impressive. The forward line created plenty of chances with mixed results, some wonderful points from Harry and James added to the early goal that Oisin scored (with a cheeky backheel) but a mixture of good defending by BSJ, us shooting from too far out and rushed shots denied us a comfortable lead that our play deserved.
Halftime talk was about continuing doing what they were, so much of their play was right with great link up, making the runs to support each other, getting into space for our kickouts and not giving BSJ the time and space to play all over the pitch, they were told to have a quick look to see if someone was in a better position before shooting and to pass if there was. Playing down the hill for the second half it didn’t take long for the scores to mount up. It was good to see the point of passing if there was someone in better position before shooting got across to them as now they worked the ball closer before shooting and the % of chances scored improved immensely. There was still some excellent long range scores Frankie played a short free into Owen T who hand passed it back to him to kick over the bar. The points were coming from everyone and from everywhere the 2 Davids pushed forward towards the end of the 2nd half from their defensive position to knock over points. A very impressive display from the lads especially in the second half, the self belief and teamwork shown from them was incredible to see.
Team 2 to follow
This was an entertaining and competitive game. Gers were slow to get going in the first half against a strong headwind but great tackling kept BSJ scoreless for much of the half.. Tom and Christian put in some great blocks and tackles and Kevin marshalled the defense. Charlie was full of energy and had some great attempts for points. Gers went in a goal down at half time.
Gers opened very strongly in the second half and were winning great ball from kick outs. Darragh and Johnny were winning lots of ball in midfield and there was some good passing interplay and this lead to lots of shots but unfortunately the mix of the breeze, shooting from too far out and small goals lead to missed opportunities. Throughout the second half Adam continued to look for good passing and set up Aodhan for an excellent point effort. In the last minutes BSJ scored a goal and point to close out the game but Gers were in with a chance right to the end.
Overall Team 3 tackled excellently and created lots of chances but will benefit from more home practicing on shooting before next game.
