The U11 girls hosted a mixed team of U11/12’s from An Tóchar Roundwood for a challenge match at Cornelscourt Sunday afternoon. After a nervous opening few minutes the Gers girls settled and the team got into their stride showing great teamwork and clever play to find space and convert to scores with some great passing and on-target shots to stretch their lead to 18-7 with 5 minutes to go in the first half. An Tóchar retaliated late in the half by making a substitute to leave a height mismatch between their frontline and our defence and capitalised scoring twice in quick succession to claw back two scores. Half time : Gers 18-13 An Tóchar.
In the second half Gers held on to their lead for the first 15 minutes and even extended it. However later in the half, despite some good individual performances from some of the girls, an uncharacteristic series of unforced errors and shaky passes combined with not competing effectively for loose ball opened the door for An Tóchar to come storming back later in the second half and hit us with a barrage of scores.
Full time : Gers 25-An Tóchar 39.
The match was a valuable lesson in advance of the start of the competitive season. It identified the importance of consistent attendance at training to maximise the cohesion of the team and improve fitness. It pinpointed areas to work on before the the league starts. Our thanks to An Tóchar for making the journey – we look forward to a re-match in the future.
