A beautiful morning to have a match – perfect conditions for a score fest for the Gers boys, who had a super workout this morning against Cuala in our grading league.
Finishing up 4 13 to 1 point, the Gers dominance was evident from early on, with strong play through a crowded middle of the field, spreading the ball wide early and accurate kick passing up to our forward line.

Seamus started in goals for us, but had very little to do and moved into the full back line for the second half, where he played his usual stormer, with some excellent defence as well as a couple of runs up the field. Our backline was anchored all day by Brian H, who handled all that was thrown at him – big or small, he got out in front or used his pace to cut off any danger. Cian C, playing against many of his schoolmates, had a point to prove all day and got stuck in very early on… bursting out of defence on many occasions as well as playing up front for the second half taking a number of frees and getting a fine score.

Our half back line was exceptionally strong all day, with Conor R in the centre (a rock!), with some fine high catching, and Paul and Ruari on either side, both of whom had stormers! Ruari took a heavy knock in the first half going for a high ball, but got back on for the second half to keep Cuala out. Paul had some great runs up and down the field, as well as picking up a lot of ball all day. Mark O L came into the game for Ruari’s injury at wing back – again he demonstrated his great footballing skills in attack and defence, netting some fine scores as well as some great one twos.

Midfield was crowded all day, and where Cuala were strongest – they had some big men jumping, and great credit to our Conor K and Mathew F, who gave no quarter in the individual battles. Conor K’s fielding, tackling and sheer competitiveness was awesome! Matthew worked very well in his first midfield role… and came into his own in the second half when we spread the team wider on the pitch and made some more space. His “heads up” style of play and his switching of the game to the other side of the field on a few occasions was excellent to behold!

Upfront we had a scoring fest – led by Adam and Cian M – both of whom had fine games today. Great to see both boys working hard to get out in front and win the individual battles for the 50:50 ball… more of that next week lads! Max also had a great game, showing well out wide on a number of occasions to give options to our half backs. Luke L showed once again today how cultured a left leg he has, as well as a great footballing brain. Daniel C had another super game, great hands, great anticipation and reading of the game as well as his usual strength and pace. James also played his part up front with a long stint out wide trying to broaden our play… unlucky not to get a clear shot at a point, he got stuck in like those around him.

All in all a good performance, but we will have much stronger opposition into the summer. Lets use it to build our confidence and get our injuries back playing! Missing Eoin H, and Byron – both injured. Also missing Conor B and Cian D as well as Hubbie who was in Cork. See you all Monday night!
