Geraldines 3 – 16 Lucan 6 – 5
This wasn’t easy! We had to dig deep! And dig deep we did… in our first game on our new pitch in Meadowvale it was very important to win – well done to all the boys! Down 2 goals in the opening minutes, we had a lot to do to get back in control of the game – which we did, with a 2 point win in the end! 3 16 Gers to 6 5 Lucan.
Unfortunately numbers were very unbalanced this morning, with Lucan arriving with only 11 players (which meant we could only play 11 as well). We had 19!! So it meant we had to rotate throughout the whole game… very difficult for everyone, not least the players. We’ll be working hard to vary the opposition in the challenge matches to spread around the playing time more… so stick with us!
Max played a lot of the game in goals today… and defended bravely, with some excellent kick outs in particular. Towards the end of the match Matthew F took over to keep Lucan out. Out full backline started out as Cian C and Seamus, both battling very well, with some very fast and strong forwards against them. Seamus as usual showed real strength and composure under the ball, and Cian was his usual self – dogged and determined to break out from defence. Later we switched Ruari back in from the forward line to corner back, where he snuffed out a number of Lucan attacks. Naoise continued on from where he finished against Ballyboden later on, with strong play in the full back line.
Conor K and Paul started as our half backs. Conor K covered every blade of grass, with his usual strength and ball winning ability. A couple of lovely points capped a great performance. Paul had a fine second half in particular, making some great runs up the field and covering back as required. One long range point at the end of a fine Gers move was great to see. Cian D, just back from a long injury also lined out in the back line for a while, and showed some of his old strengths and hard work. Great to have you back Cian!
Our mid field dynamos were Byron and Conor R, both battled all day up and down the field. It was hard work, with every high ball needing to be challenged for – both boys showed real bravery, and as far as the writer counted, both got on the scoreboard as well.
Up front, we were all action, and as the scoreboard shows, got a huge number of points. Lucan’s keeper proved to be very strong and we made him look good in the first half, taking 5 or 6 hopeful shots at goal, all to no avail. But then we started taking our points and that settled things down. Daniel C had a great game out wide, winning some great catches and getting a few lovely points. Matthew F capped another fine performance, building well on last week, with 3 points from play, including finishing a move with a fist pass over the bar – very clever Matthew! We did put some great moves together during the game, and Mark O’L was stuck in a lot of them, with another fine display, up and down the pitch, getting one great goal and combining with Paul for a second, as well as 3 points.Cian M played in the full forward line in both halves, but having most impact in the second half getting on the end of a number of moves, unluckly on a few occasions not to get scores. Luke L was the real impact substitution today, going on up front and scoring a goal and a point with his left leg – showing real composure on the ball. Adam, still a little tender around the sore ankle, was a target man up front again for us. Disappointed not to see one of the great moves of the match not get a goal, he still battled well, working to get out in front more and more. James also got a stint up front, but due to the numbers on the line, could have done with more time in play. Next week James.
Once again, we had fantastic support on the line, including Ted our club secretary and Darren Magee our club Games Development Officer. Everyone was proud to get the result in the end and proud of how well the boys battled when the chips were down!! 3 goals and 16 points is some tally any day of the week!
See you all on Monday evening for training. Challenge matches next Saturday all going well!
