Another fine display today with a number of our key players out of action for various reasons. Today really showed the strength of the panel, on a day when the boys really got stuck in demonstrated why they are becoming one of the most talked about panels in South Dublin football at the moment!
Again, playing on the fine Stepaside all-weather pitch, Olafs travelled with intent, and a strong panel of 18 players. The start was going to be very important so Shay’s warm up speech before the match had the boys ready to compete from the word go. And compete they did!
The game was built from our defence with Luke in goals at the start showing safe hands and excellent kick outs as always. His second half performance in the attack showed excellent awareness, winning plenty of ball on the right wing and delivering some excellent crosses time and time again. We had a huge defensive performance all day – anchored with Cian C and Seamus (back from sickness last week) – both showing great bravery and covering the ground very well. Wing backs were Brian H and Mathew B… Brian burst out of defence with real purpose on three or four occasions – crucial interceptions and then strong deliveries up the field were vital for us. Mathew had his best display for the club for along time – with one outstanding high catch in the first half coming to mind in particular.
Conor K (carrying a cold) was outstanding at centre back – he broke Olafs heart with multiple interceptions, carries up the field, but most impressively his 10 or more block downs. Conor finished the game in goals steady as a rock. Block downs were the theme of the day! What an effective way to defend… keep them going boys!
Midfield today was managed by Conor R and Byron – 2 big performances – both covering every blade of grass on the pitch – never shirking a tackle. A great performance from both of them. Covering up and down the pitch is not easy in that pace today.
Up front, the attack was led by Mathew F, with Conor B and Adam left and right. All got scores. All were key men in the game. Mathew mopped up ball after ball in the middle, making some great moves happen – always looking for the next pass. A great game Mathew! Conor B battled very well for the whole match, including getting on the scoreboard. In the second half he took up a more defensive role as Olafs moved up another attacking forward to try to change the shape of the game. Conor counteracted the move very well.
Adam, today without the ankle strap was again sharp in front of goal – hitting the net twice! He worked hard throughout the game and is becoming a real target man for the team.
Rouri played a new position today – upfront full forward – he had another blinder! As the game developed he moved out the field and created havoc in the Olafs side – chasing everything and getting absolutely no protection from the referee!!! A super game with some great scores. James lined out top of the left and Max top of the right. Max had one of his best games so far this year… getting involved in a number of great moves and showing real heart. He also played in goals for some of the second half, again very safe. James also had one of his best games – battling well to defend but also getting involved in a number of moves.
The Olaf’s manager was very complimentary at the end of the match on how well all the boys performed. We will certainly get another game in before the Summer.
Thanks to Leo for reffing at short notice – a thankless job!
Really proud of the way the boys stood up today… there will be plenty of tougher challenges this year, but today was a great stepping stone. Great to see all the support!
