Our extremely brave and committed U14 team got their 2014 season off to a winning start today in Cornelscourt. They beat a strong St. Margaret’s team by 3 – 9 to 2 – 5. This was a real team performance, with an impressive 11 different players on the score sheet.
Our lads, having started very strong, St Margaret’s fought their way back in to the game, to go 1 point ahead with 10 minutes to go. However, our lads dug deep and came away with their well-deserved 7 point win.
Jamie opened Geraldine’s account with a well worked point from mid field. Kevin and Thomas added to this with 2 other well taken points, with the score then 0.3 to 0.1. Geraldine’s playing up the hill were by far the stronger team, for the last 15 minutes of the first half. They rattled the cross bar twice, the upright goal post once and had many chances to put the team well ahead at half time. Borja and Aaron added two more points before half time with Geraldine’s leading by 2 points ( 0 :5 to 0: 3) at the break.
The second half opened with the lads playing beautiful passing and team football. Twelve minutes in Stephen had scored a point and Donal had added to our lead with a very well taken goal and we were 1: 6 to 3 points up. Then for the next 10 minutes St Margaret’s hit hard. They put the game up to our lads. They scored 2 goals and two points to our one point by Ronan. This left us one point down at 1:7 to their 2:5.
What was really impressive about this game was that the lads stayed strong on the pitch. They showed leadership and real belief in themselves. The lads worked really well, up and down and across the pitch. Daniel ran all day, covered and set up many plays. Donal stepped up and sent a bullet of a ball to the back of the net. The team won a free which Liam sent over. This U14 Geraldine’s team closed out the match with another well taken goal from Ciaran. Our win was secured when Jamie got the final point.
Cormac was excellent in goal with his backs of Chris at full back who was solid all day and was well supported in defence by Jamie and Seamus. Our other forwards Sean & Conor worked hard all day and set up many chances for the team.
Well done lads with a great performance today. You played as a team and did yourselves proud. See you all for training on Monday evening Stepaside.
