The game started fast with Cuala playing into the Dunnes Stores end and quickly creating 3 good chances but putting all 3 wide with a fourth excellently saved with the strategically placed right leg of Carl Byrne, our keeper. After 5 minutes the Gers managed to get some territory and quickly added 3 points and a goal from Conor Downey being in the right place at the right time like all good forwards.
Both teams traded blows with no scores for 10 minutes until Cuala had a productive spell for 6 minutes scoring 2. 2 to take the lead mainly via their 6 foot 3 centre forward Stephen a classmate of some of our lads in Clonkeen.
A very tight game with only a point between the teams at half time with the Gers down by 2.2 to 1.4.
The second period started badly with Cuala getting a goal and a point leaving the deficit at 5 points. Many important battles raged all over the pitch with no quarter given. A key turning point was the opportunistic strike by Ben Clarke with a volleyed goal mid way bring the Gers back on level terms after some great points including an inspiring score from right half back Niall Connaughton.
Further points added by the Conor Downey, James Monaghan and a goal and a point from Colm O’Leary completed an exciting and victorious finish to a well fought game.
Bragging rights in their respective schools on Monday morning will go to the Gers for now and well done to all the boys in a game that was won by the team that wanted it more.
Vocal support from all of our parents proved a boost worth a least 3 points and in games that matter that is the difference.
Unbeaten so far – well done the Gers U14s!
