Our men turned out against a strong Boden team today. They started very well with two very good points from Chris Roland and Kevin Quinn. However the Boden team came at them and pulled ahead with a number of points and many strong attacks. Ciaran Haverty in goal today made a number of great saves. Our defence as usual was very strong and absorbed the pressure very well. We picked up two more points before half time from Conor Keane and Stephen Murphy, before the whistle on a scoreline of our 0.4 to their 0.8.
The 2nd half did not start as planned with Boden getting the first score. We picked up a number of great scores from Jamie Blake Holmes, Paul O’Conor & Kevin Quinn. With about 10mins to go we were down 5pts on a score line of 0.8 to Boden’s 1.10. The match looked like it had slipped away from us.
This team has shown real character all year and great team work. They dug deep and started the come back with a very well taken 45 from Chris that ended up in the back of the net. Now just 2 points down.
A very well worked team score out of defence ended with a great score from Kevin. Boden went back up the pitch, got a free and went 2 points ahead. We were now heading towards injury time but the lads never gave up. We played the ball down into attack, it came to Stephen who took a great point off his left foot to put us 1pt down. On the kick out, after a few rounds of play we won a free wide on the wing, about 30 yards out. We all knew this was the last kick of the game. Up stepped Kevin, composed himself, took his time, looked at the posts and launched a very high kick that sailed between the posts. Game all level at 1.11 each, the referee blew up the game. Great finish to a tough game.
This has been a great year for this U16 team, who are well supported by our U15’s. They have had a very long season having played 14 League games, which started on the 30th Jan with a win over Round Towers the eventual League winners. They finished the league today in a very strong 3rd place ahead of teams like Crokes, Boden, Liffey Gaels, Crumlin, St Peters etc.
The highlight of the year for this U16 Team was winning the Championship Shield on the 21st May against St.Catherine’s on a score line of 2.18 to 3.9. Well done lads.
The parental and club support for this team has been great all year. It is fantastic to see so many parents, family and friends out supporting the lads at every match. This is what Club & Gaelic is all about.
