Gers 2-8     Stars of Erin 0-6

@ Cúirt an Choirnéil

The Gers finally got their first win of the season against neighbouring Stars of Erin in a muddy, windswept and at times snowy Cornelscourt today. Plenty of scoring chances were being created but the conditions made handling and footwork most difficult. An early penalty conceded by the away ‘keeper went unpunished as Aido forced a double save from the Stars custodian, they then tapped over a free at the far end of the field to start the scoring. All of our hard work had to eventually pay off and Donal McEnery got on the end of a good passing move running off an Aido Greene layoff to slot over – Dick Young and John Doyle scores were followed by a McEnery pointed sideline kick before Stars scored a great team point to leave 3 between the sides which would never of been enough playing against the elements for the second half. A moment of magic/pure pox luck by Johnny Doyle resulted in a lobbed goal over the Stars no.1 from 20 meters with minutes to go till half time, he followed up with a sweet point to leave the score at 1-6 to 0-2 at the break.

The players sheltered under the trees before reassuming positions on the badly cutting up pitch. A lively restart resulted in a well finished Jonathon Roche goal which was followed up by a Pee Flynn point and another Aido Greene free to push out the lead. But Stars started to win the midfield battle for the last quarter and bombarded Neil Costello’s goal and only for some excellent defending by the back 6 and our ‘keeper they would have surely of scored a goal or 2. Karol Guerin at no.4 and Gary Bridges at 7 were the pick of the backs. Stars eventually had to make do with taking a few points and the game blew to it’s wintry conclusion. The returning John Ahern oozed composure and his midfield partner captain Dick Young put in his now customary massive shift. Up front Mairtín ‘Beag’ Jennings showed very well at no.14 ably supported by the energetic Greene and Roche. The referee Lorcán Potts did a very good job in reffing what were terrible conditions.

Next up is our league game at home to Scoil Uí Chonaill next Sunday.
